Experts recommend pulmonary ultrasound for COVID-19

Learn about the difference pulmonary ultrasound can make.
In the current COVID-19 situation, emergency physicians must quickly select patients according to the severity of their disease. A POCUS (Point of Care Ultrasound) of the lungs can help you do this. It is a very valuable and effective tool to quickly and reliably assess the condition of a patient's lungs.
In addition to the ultrasound systems available everywhere, portable devices are currently particularly suitable, as they allow emergency doctors to use ultrasound directly on site. The advantage of this procedure is that the doctor who admitted the patient can also perform the sonography. This leads to a considerable reduction in the number of other contact persons, as the patient does not have to be transferred to another department. The waiting time for an examination can thus be drastically reduced. If access to a CT scan is restricted, pulmonary ultrasound can be used for priority selection of patients.

The U-Lite sonoscanner is an ultra-portable HD ultrasound scanner to which a small 4-10 MHz convex probe (Blue Protocol by Prof. Lichtenstein), specially developed for emergency lung diagnostics, can be attached. Ten further exchangeable probes are available.

The following two studies refer to the current situation:
- Poggiali, 2020 : Can Lung US Help Critical Care Clinicians in the Early Diagnosis of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pneumonia? (Journal Radiology)
- Peng, 2020: Findings of lung ultrasonography of novel corona virus pneumonia during the 2019-2020 epidemic. (Journal Intensive Care Medicine)

A further English webinar is being planned.

Past Webinars
On Wednesday, April 8, 2020, Sonoscanner held a webinar on "The contribution of pulmonary ultrasound to the management of the COVID 19 crisis" in French.
This one-hour webinar gave the opportunity to discover the principles of ultrasound virus testing and to answers all of the attenders questions.
It alternated between theoretical and practical cases.
