Webinar | From mechanisms to advanced applications of transcranial alternating current stimulation

Neural activity in the brain is inherently complex and includes various forms of coordination on different scales. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a non-invasive method to modulate brain activity using mild oscillating electric fields. Thanks to the control over the frequency and phase of imposed stimulation, tACS is in a great position to manipulate rhythmic neural activity selectively and safely. Here, I will first present the recent animal studies regarding the tACS mechanisms. The conversation will include what we know and what we don't know regarding the neural spike-field coherence, dose-dependency, and frequency specificity of tACS. I will then discuss computational modeling ways to translate animal research to humans. Finally, I will describe two new promising neuromodulatory approaches for targeting neural connectivity - cross-frequency tACS and traveling wave tACS. These methods substantially extend the toolset of available research and therapeutic strategies using non-invasive neuromodulation.
